About Osteopathy
What is osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a unique, truly holistic therapy which recognises the important link between the structure of the body and the way it functions.
The aim is to get your muscles and joints working freely and in good balance and alignment. Osteopathy is a manual hands-on therapy which facilitates healing by focusing on how your bones, muscles, nerves and connective tissues or "fascia" interact.
I will work on your immediate problem, as well as looking at what is happening to your whole body, taking the bigger picture into account.
We will also look at what else may be contributing to your problems such as work set up, postural habits and more....
Safe and effective
Treating a range of people in East Auckland, I am a highly trained, registered and regulated practitioner. At my osteopathy clinic, I can liaise with your medical practitioner, refer you for x-rays and scans and refer to specialists. My practice is covered by ACC and many insurance companies. I can also tell if you have some kind of medical problem that is beyond my ability to fix and refer you on for appropriate assistance.
I do not prescribe drugs and medication, but can give you suggestions as to what over-the-counter medications may be of help, or what medications your doctor may prescribe. I can also assure you, my advice does not countermand that of your doctor or pharmacist, as they are fully qualified to make these judgements. At all times refer to your doctor or pharmacist in matters of medication.
"I have been going to Matthew for the last 2-3 years for back, shoulder and neck treatment. I feel he has a genuine interest in my well-being and is always looking for different ways to help me .. He doesn't cause any pain and I always feel completely comfortable around him. I have recommended him to many people and I know of at least 3 other ladies at my work that also see him on a regular basis." Natalie T

ASSESSMENT
I will start by discussing with you your relevant case history and review previous xrays or referral information as required. As an active osteopathic practitioner I have studied many other approaches and techniques, some from the physiotherapy and chiropractic treatment models. These are integrated into my treatment sessions so seamlessly that most people aren’t even aware I am doing it. It’s a matter of experience, learning what works and what doesn’t and learning about your body’s unique needs and adapting treatment as we go.
TREATMENT
I start by treating osteopathically, then will bring in other solutions as necessary to get results. Everyone is different, however my aim is to always ensure good results quickly. If something isn’t working I will bring in other ideas and plans. I have learned many ways to deal with your problems, using osteopathic techniques on muscles, bones and joints. Part of the treatment plan includes provide massage with or without oil, to relax and loosen those tense muscles. Gentle manipulations and stretching can get everything moving well again.
ONGOING MANAGEMENT
At the end of your treatment, we will review a plan for ongoing management, whether that is booking another appointment, giving you some at home exercises to do or asking you to review your work station or posture habits. I never plan to over treat, and will be guided by your needs. It is often the case that the patient feels better within a couple of days of treatment, so if you find you don't need a follow up appointment, then that is mission accomplished! The sooner you're back to normal, the better!
